Utah Department of Corrections
Utah DOC offender search allows searches by offender ID or name. Utah has a small state prison system with four facilities. The Utah State Correctional Facility opened in 2022 as a modern facility replacing the aging Utah State Prison in Draper.
The official inmate search is available at corrections.utah.gov/offender-search. Federal inmates from Utah are often housed at FCI Englewood (CO).
Visitation in Utah Facilities
Utah DOC visitor approval requires a visitor application. Processing takes 2 - 3 weeks. Background checks for adult visitors. Utah's small system size allows for somewhat faster processing than larger states.
Always confirm visiting schedules directly with the facility before traveling. Find specific visitation rules on each facility's page in our Utah prison directory.
Sending Mail to Utah Inmates
Utah DOC mail requires the offender ID number. Standard 4x6 photos accepted. The new Utah State Correctional Facility has modern mail processing systems.
InmateAid delivers letters and photos, postcards, and magazines to Utah facilities. Want to receive letters without sharing your home address? Our Letters From Inmates service scans and delivers inmate mail to your account.
Phone Calls from Utah Facilities
Utah is not currently among the states that offer free inmate phone calls. Securus Technologies holds the Utah DOC contract.
Following the FCC's Martha Wright-Reed Order (effective April 6, 2026), per-minute rates for inmate calls are now federally capped at state and federal facilities. Find current carrier and rate information on each facility's page in our Utah prison directory.

See our Send Money guide or navigate to the specific facility page for current provider information.

Frequently Asked Questions About Utah Prisons
What is the Utah State Correctional Facility?
Utah State Correctional Facility opened in September 2022 as Utah's primary new maximum and medium-security facility, built on the same general site in the Salt Lake Valley as the old Utah State Prison in Draper. The old Draper prison - opened in 1951 - had become difficult to operate safely and efficiently, and replacing it had been a state priority for over a decade. USCF was designed with modern correctional principles: better natural light, more programming space, improved staff visibility, and a layout intended to reduce tension. The old Draper buildings were demolished after the transition. USCF's location on the east side of the Salt Lake Valley provides reasonable access for families across the Wasatch Front.
What is an offender ID in Utah?
Every Utah state inmate is assigned a unique offender ID number when they enter state custody. It must appear on all mail sent to Utah DOC facilities and is required for the Utah DOC offender search at corrections.utah.gov. County jail detainees have their own booking numbers that are separate from state offender IDs - county detainees don't have a state number until they enter state custody after sentencing. If your person was recently sentenced and transferred, allow 24 - 48 hours for the system to update.
Does Utah have free prison phone calls?
No - Utah has not eliminated phone call fees. Securus Technologies holds the Utah DOC contract. The FCC's April 2026 rate caps apply to interstate calls from Utah state facilities, reducing costs from historical highs, but calls are not free. Utah has a relatively small state prison system - about 6,700 inmates - and phone reform has not been a legislative priority in recent sessions. Set up a Securus prepaid account rather than accepting collect calls.
What is Central Utah Correctional Facility?
Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison is Utah's medium-security state prison, in Sanpete County about 100 miles south of Salt Lake City in the Sanpete Valley - about 2 hours via I-15 south and US-50 east. Gunnison is a small town of about 4,000 people where the prison is one of the largest employers. Manti, the county seat nearby, has more services if you're planning an overnight stay for a visit. Contact CUCF at 435-528-6000 for visitor applications and visiting schedules.
How do I find someone in a Utah county jail?
Utah has 29 counties, most operating their own detention facilities for pretrial detainees and shorter sentences. The Utah DOC offender search covers state prison inmates only. Contact the county jail directly or check the county's online inmate roster for county detainees. Salt Lake County Jail is the largest county detention facility in Utah. For federal arrests, use the BOP Inmate Locator at bop.gov.
What is Utah's approach to criminal justice reform?
Utah has been one of the most active bipartisan criminal justice reform states in the country. Beginning in 2015 with the Justice Reinvestment Initiative, Utah implemented a series of reforms: reduced sentences for some nonviolent offenses, expanded earned time credits enabling earlier release, more investment in treatment alternatives for substance abuse cases, and enhanced reentry support. Utah's prison population has grown more slowly than expected since these reforms, and the state is frequently cited in national discussions as evidence that conservative states can pursue meaningful reform. The new USCF facility reflects this philosophy - modern design intended to support rehabilitation.
