INTRO
Virginia's Department of Corrections (VADOC) operates more than 30 correctional facilities across the Commonwealth housing approximately 27,000 people - from Red Onion State Prison in Wise County to Deerfield Correctional Center in Augusta County. The statewide visiting framework is fully online: applications are submitted digitally, visits are scheduled through an online scheduler, and paper applications are not accepted.
Two things define Virginia's system. First: there are no vending machines in VADOC visiting rooms, and no food or drinks are permitted inside any VADOC facility during visits. This is explicitly stated statewide - not a facility-by-facility variation. Second: Virginia's dress code uses one of the most specific coverage standards in the directory - clothing must cover from the neck to the kneecaps, for all visitors including children, at all times.
Virginia uses commercial bail bonds - bail_banned = false.
VISITOR APPLICATION - ONLINE ONLY, NO PAPER ACCEPTED
All new applicants and any visitor renewing their application must submit a visitation application online. Paper applications for visitation will not be accepted.
Apply: vadoc.virginia.gov (Visitation section)
VADOC Visitor Registration: (804) 887-8341
Email: VisitationInquiries@vadoc.virginia.gov
All visitors - including minors - are required to complete the Visitor Application and Background Investigation Authorization Form before visiting. VADOC conducts a background investigation as part of the approval process and may conduct an annual record check on each approved visitor.
ACCESSIBILITY ASSISTANCE:
Friends and family members who have a visual impairment or are age 65 or older may contact Assisting Families of Inmates (AFOI) for help completing the application. AFOI is an independent organization that offers services for families of offenders. AFOI does not have access to application status information - for status, contact VADOC Visitor Registration at (804) 887-8341.
3-YEAR (36-MONTH) APPROVAL EXPIRATION
All visitor applications - new or previously approved - expire 36 months (three years) after the date of approval.
This is the longest renewal cycle in the directory. Utah requires annual renewal. South Dakota requires annual renewal. Virginia gives 3 years - but requires submission of a new, updated application at least 30 days before expiration to continue uninterrupted visitation.
Track the expiration date. If the application expires before a new one is submitted, visiting privileges lapse and must be reestablished through the full application process. Submit the renewal at least 30 days in advance - not on the expiration date itself.
Prior visitation approval does not guarantee continued approval. VADOC may conduct annual record checks and may deny renewal based on findings.
ONE NON-IMMEDIATE-FAMILY OFFENDER LIMIT
Visitors will only be approved to visit multiple offenders if the offenders are immediate family members of the visitor. Visitors are limited to visiting only one offender who is not an immediate family member.
This means: if you are approved to visit a friend (non-family) at one VADOC facility, you cannot also be approved to visit another unrelated friend at a different VADOC facility. The one-non-family-offender rule applies statewide across all VADOC institutions.
Immediate family members: standard family relationships (parent, child, spouse, sibling, grandparent, etc.). Contact VADOC at (804) 887-8341 for the full definition as applied to specific relationship categories.
SCHEDULING - ONLINE VISITATION SCHEDULER
Once approved, all visits must be scheduled online through the VADOC Visitation Scheduler. Register first if you are a new user ("Register Today" option). Schedule at vadoc.virginia.gov.
ARRIVE 1 HOUR EARLY:
Please arrive at the facility one hour before the scheduled visit for security screening. Processing can take time - arriving at the scheduled start time does not guarantee full processing before the visit begins.
All institutions allow visiting on Saturdays, Sundays, and state holidays. Verify with the specific facility to confirm which day(s) the offender is eligible for visits - many institutions alternate visiting days based on the alphabet or offender ID number.
ALTERNATING DAY SCHEDULING:
To reduce crowding in visiting rooms, many VADOC institutions alternate which offenders may be visited on which days, based on the last name alphabet or offender ID number. This means even though an institution allows weekend visiting, a specific offender may only be eligible on Saturday (not Sunday) or vice versa. Confirm the offender's designated visiting day before traveling.
NO FOOD, NO DRINKS, NO VENDING MACHINES
No food or drinks will be allowed in any VADOC facility during visits. There is no access to vending machines.
This is explicit VADOC statewide policy - not a facility-level restriction. Virginia is the only state in the directory that explicitly states no vending machines as a statewide rule.
The practical implications: families driving long distances to remote Virginia facilities cannot bring snacks for children, cannot purchase drinks for an extended visit, and cannot use a vending card or coins. Plan for meals before and after the visit. Bring nothing edible to the facility.
Minimum visit length: offenders are allowed a minimum of one hour per visiting day with visitors. The actual length may vary based on the number of visitors, available space, and institutional staff resources. Procedures may be changed at any time without prior notice - contact the facility before visiting.
DRESS CODE - NECK TO KNEECAPS
Virginia's statewide visitor dress code requires that clothing cover from the neck to the kneecaps for all visitors, including children. This applies to every VADOC facility.
THE NECK-TO-KNEECAP STANDARD:
Clothing must cover from the neck down to the kneecaps. This is one of the most specific coverage standards in the directory - Utah requires sleeves to cover the full shoulder in all body positions; Virginia requires clothing to cover from the neck to the kneecap. Both standards are more specific than the generic "modest attire" guidance used by most states.
All visitors must wear appropriate underwear. Footwear must be worn at all times - no bare feet.
PROHIBITED CLOTHING (statewide):
- Tube tops, tank tops, or halter tops
- Clothes that expose a person's midriff, side, or back
- Mini-skirts, mini-dresses, shorts, skorts, or culottes at or above the kneecap
- Form-fitting clothes such as leotards, spandex, and leggings
- Clothing containing symbols or signs with inappropriate language or graphics, including gang symbols, racist comments, or inflammatory communications
WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY PROHIBITED:
Watches and all wearable technology devices are prohibited. This is explicitly stated and includes smartwatches and - specifically named in VADOC policy - Google Glasses. No wearable tech of any kind enters VADOC facilities.
DRESS ADJUDICATION:
Any visitor whose dress is considered inappropriate will be referred to the Administrative Duty Officer, who makes the final decision on admittance to the visiting room.
No specific color prohibition is published statewide for VADOC (no blue/white/orange equivalent).
MINOR CHILDREN
Children under the age of 18 may visit only with the permission of their parent or guardian, or pursuant to a valid court order. All minor children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who is on the offender's approved visiting list.
Emancipated minors - including spouses - are approved for visitation in the same manner as adult visitors.
VADOC child-friendly video: VADOC has produced a short video ("VADOC Visitation Reminders") to help prepare children for what to expect during a prison visit. Families with minor children are encouraged to watch it before the first visit. Available at vadoc.virginia.gov.
VISITING PROCEDURES - KEY PROVISIONS

- Children 17 and younger: birth certificate, state-issued ID, or student ID acceptable
- All visitors subject to search - vehicle, person, belongings
