Yankton County Jail is for County Jail offenders sentenced up to twenty four months.

The Yankton County Jail is a detention center located at 410 Walnut St Yankton, SD which is operated locally by the Yankton County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Yankton County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Yankton Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Mail: Inmates may receive books mailed directly to them from the publisher or retail outlet only. All incoming and outgoing mail is screened for content; anything found to inappropriate will be returned to the sender or placed in the inmate's property.

Inmate Commissary: A commissary is available to all inmates who have money in their jail account. Money can be deposited for the inmate at the Kiosk located in the jail lobby or by mailing a money order to the jail. They can also order at jailatm.com

Work Release: A deposit and completed set of work release papers is required prior to the 1st day of work. Inmates are not allowed to work on Sunday and Holidays. Inmates may hold only one job while incarcerated. Inmates are not allowed to work out of Yankton County or out of state without prior approval. The jail does not have the facility for the laundering of inmate work clothing. The Sheriff of Yankton County has the final say if you are allowed into the work release program.

Visitation Information

Yankton County Jail - Visitation

Inmate Visiting Information:

  1. Visitation will be offered Monday-Sunday between the hours of 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM and Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday 7: 00 PM to 9:00 PM. We will no longer be having visitation Mon. Wed. or Fri. evenings.
  2. Each inmate is allowed one 20 minute visit daily. Visitation will be terminated automatically at the end of the allotted time. You will be given notice that the visit is about to end.
  3. You will be required to sign into the visitation log and show a photo ID to the Officer at each visit.
  4. All visits are digitally recorded.
  5. Any inappropriate Conduct or Action will not be tolerated and may result in your loss of further visitation privileges at this facility.
  6. Only two persons allowed at a visitation station per inmate during a visit you may switch off with another party during this time.
  7. Children must be supervised at all times. You may be asked to leave if your child is disruptive to any other visitors or disruptive to our facility.
  8. Visitors may not drop off any items for the staff to deliver to the inmates i.e. photos, cards, letters and mail, books or clothing.
  9. You may only visit one inmate per day.
