Can You Send Books to an Inmate Through Amazon?

Some prisons I think only allow you to have books mailed/shipped directly from the publisher? This isn't something we can do via Amazon is it? Does that mean we'd need to contact a publisher directly and get it shipped under their consent? Thanks

Amazon works and is the standard solution for this exact requirement. You do not need to contact publishers directly or navigate any complicated ordering process.

Here is why Amazon satisfies the publisher direct requirement. When correctional facilities require books to come directly from the publisher they are trying to ensure that the book has not passed through outside hands where it could be tampered with or used to conceal contraband. Amazon ships from their own warehouses and fulfillment centers, which facilities recognize as an acceptable equivalent to publisher direct shipment. The book goes from a controlled commercial environment straight to the facility without stopping in anyone's home or hands along the way.

The process is straightforward. You order the book on Amazon, enter the inmate's full legal name and inmate ID number along with the facility's mailing address as the shipping destination, and Amazon ships it directly there. As long as the book itself meets the facility's content guidelines and arrives in new condition from Amazon's warehouse, it should clear the mailroom without issue.

A few things worth confirming before ordering. Some facilities have restrictions on hardcover books, preferring paperback only because hardcovers can be used to conceal items more easily. Some limit the number of books that can be received at one time or that an inmate can possess in their cell. And some facilities have restrictions on specific content categories regardless of format.

Calling the facility's mailroom directly before placing the first order to confirm their specific book policy takes five minutes and eliminates the risk of an order being rejected after the fact. Once you know the rules ordering through Amazon becomes a simple and reliable process.
