Have a question?

Incarceration affects every member of a family not just the person behind bars. Children, spouses, parents, and siblings all navigate their own version of the experience often without support or guidance. This section covers the full range of challenges families face including maintaining relationships through letters and calls, explaining incarceration to children, managing finances on a reduced income, navigating the visitation process, supporting a loved one through the emotional difficulty of incarceration, and preparing for reentry together. The questions answered here come from real families in real situations, parents who have not heard from their son in weeks, spouses managing alone, children trying to understand where their parent went. InmateAid was built by someone who experienced both sides of this equation and the guidance here reflects that understanding. Families are not bystanders in this process. They are essential to their loved one's success both inside and after release. See also our sections on Visitation, Relationship Issues, and Send Inmate Mail.

Inmates do not have access to the internet so they will no know about or see the profile page. The website is for the loved ones to be able to stay in touch. We have been around a long time and the services and products are priced fairly. We are reliable and convenient.

Inmates do not have access to the Internet and without it they cannot access InmateAid to know there is an Inmate Profile Page. Unfortunately there are no "free programs" for communication. Your inmate can apply for indigent mail with his counselor and they do provide free stamps, envelopes and writing material.

Going to jail does not automatically change a child support order. Only a judge can change or modify a child support order. If a parent that is in jail has income or assets that can be used to pay for your child's support, he or she has to continue to pay child support. If there already is a child support order, and the parent who was ordered to pay child support goes to jail (is incarcerated), the child support order does...

The problem is that there are no programs in place for people on the outside to effectuate assistance on the inside in this genre to date. The only way we've seen citizens actually make impacts on inmates while incarcerated is in the Alcohol Anonymous area and in some isolated drug abuse situations. The prisons will allow members of AA or NA come in and lead the meetings for interested inmates. They are given special visitation privileges and conduct meeting in...

You should call the facility and ask to speak with the institution's chaplain. They will arrange some communication and comfort for the inmate in this time of sadness.

Serving legal papers to an inmate is a routine process and prisons are set up to handle it. Here is how it works. Most correctional facilities have a notary public on staff. If your husband is willing to sign a waiver of summons, that waiver can be notarized right there at the facility. He would be called to the administrative offices by the unit secretary to accept service and sign any required documents. You do not need a court order or...

There are no programs specifically designed to help families of inmates cover household bills during incarceration. That gap in the support system is real and it is one of the less talked about hardships that falls on families who suddenly lose a household income when someone goes inside. The assistance programs that exist are the same ones available to any low-income household, regardless of the circumstances that created the financial strain. SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, is the most immediate resource...
