It would appear that your boyfriend got an incident report for some sort of internal violation for most likely possession of contraband. It could be a cellphone, drugs or something on the banned list. The penalty is disciplinary confinement which is the "hole", the SHU, or segregated housing used as punishment. It means limited contact with other inmates and limited privileges like no phone calls, no visitation or limited personal property.

It depends on the quantity and the substance. It also depends on how it was brought in. The guards will want to know how they were smuggled in and who helped. If the inmate is cooperative, then the penalty might be a few weeks in the SHU. There are no limits to the length of a lockdown. The warden is the final decision-maker when the lockdown is lifted. The warden only answers to the head of the BOP. The BOP only answers to the DOJ and inmates do not have any "rights" except the right to privacy as it relates to their visitation list, phone list and commissary money spent.
