This is one of the most common points of confusion families run into when a loved one is approaching the end of their sentence and the explanation is straightforward once you understand how the Bureau of Prisons defines release.

The date displayed on the BOP inmate locator is the official out date, meaning the date the inmate is fully and completely released from federal custody. Halfway house placement, technically called a Residential Reentry Center, does not count as release in the eyes of the BOP. An inmate transferred to a halfway house is still considered in federal custody and still under the supervision of the Bureau of Prisons even though they are living in a community setting rather than behind a prison wall.

The halfway house phase is a structured reentry period where inmates transition back into daily life with support services, employment requirements, and supervision conditions while still technically serving their sentence. Full release from that custody does not happen until the inmate completes the halfway house phase and transitions to supervised release or their sentence expires.

So if your husband is moving to a halfway house in late October or early November, that transfer is real and it is happening on that timeline. The 2016 date on the BOP website reflects when he will be completely free from federal custody after completing the halfway house phase as well.

Think of it as two finish lines. The halfway house transfer is the first one and the BOP release date is the second. Both are worth celebrating and the first one is coming up soon.
