Will other inmates target someone with legal help

Will other inmates know if I am trying to help my kid get the information he needs for a plea (there are two other defendants). If so, will the inmates be receptive to the fact he has help or will they pummel him for having help?

Other inmates will not automatically know that your son is getting help from you, but information inside spreads quickly if it is talked about openly. In most facilities, inmates pay close attention to each other, especially when someone is new or dealing with an active case.

The biggest concern is not the help itself, but how much your son shares. Having outside support, legal research, or family involvement is not a problem on its own. Many inmates have people helping them from the outside. What can create risk is discussing case details, legal strategy, or anything that could be interpreted as cooperation.

There are some important guidelines he should follow:

  • Keep all legal matters private
  • Do not discuss details of the case with other inmates
  • Avoid talking about plea deals or cooperation
  • Be respectful but not overly open about personal business

Being labeled as someone who is cooperating or “telling” can create serious problems inside. That is why discretion matters. Staying quiet about legal strategy is the safest approach.

You can continue helping him gather information and prepare for his case. Just make sure he understands that what happens on the outside should stay between you, him, and his attorney.
