Florida has the second largest ICE detention footprint in the United States, with 38 or more facilities in use as of early 2026 - trailing only Texas. The state operates under a single ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) field office headquartered in Plantation (Miami Field Office), which also covers Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Florida expanded its immigration detention capacity dramatically beginning in 2025 under Governor DeSantis's 'Operation Tidal Wave,' which transferred over 10,000 individuals to federal custody. The state took the unusual step of converting a former state correctional institution (Baker County) and operating a large open-air facility in the Everglades (the Florida Soft-Sided Facility, widely known as 'Alligator Alcatraz') specifically for ICE use. Florida also operates a 287(g) program at multiple counties. ICE detention is civil, not criminal. A person held in ICE detention has not been convicted of a crime. They are being held pending a civil immigration proceeding. This guide is a factual reference. Last verified: June 2026.

As of late May 2026, Florida Congressman Maxwell Frost visited the facility reporting possible imminent closure.
