Located at 266 Water St in Eddyville, KY, KSP carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. KSP offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. The mission of the KSP is to operate a maximum-security institution for adult male inmates, focusing on providing care, custody, and control within a safe and secure environment. The primary objective is to facilitate the transition of inmates to less secure facilities based on their demonstrated conduct, program performance, and individual needs. By empowering inmates to take responsibility for their rehabilitation, the institution aims to enhance their prospects of reintegrating into society as productive citizens.
Established in 1889 and situated near Eddyville in Lyon County, KSP is the Department's oldest and sole maximum-security facility, housing Kentucky's death row inmates. With a population of 856 and a staff of 348, KSP is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of security and operational efficiency.
The Department at KSP offers a range of evidence-based programs tailored to address various reentry, supervision, and incarceration needs. These programs encompass areas such as anger management, moral reconation therapy, substance abuse treatment, and educational opportunities.
Among the educational programs available at KSP are options for obtaining a GED diploma, vocational training in fields like collision repair and wastewater treatment, and opportunities for pursuing associate's, bachelor's, and master's degrees. Additionally, KSP offers specialized programs like the PORTAL New Direction initiative, designed to provide inmates with the tools and support they need to make positive life changes. KSP maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
To schedule an appointment to visit, please email KSP.Visits@ky.gov. All visits must be requested via email by the inmate visitor. The visitor will need to schedule any visit at least seven days in advance. In-person visiting requests must include the visitor's name, date of birth, and social security number. The request must also include the date they wish to visit and if the visit will be in-person or virtual. The visitation time will be assigned based on availability and approval.

In-Person:
5CH - First Tuesday and Wednesday of month; In-person: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
4CH - Second Tuesday and Wednesday of month; In-person: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
6CH GP - Third Tuesday and Wednesday of the month; In-person: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
SSU (Death Row) - Fourth Tuesday and Wednesday of the month; In-person or Video: 8:00 - 10:30 a.m.
PC - Fourth Tuesday and Wednesday of the month; In-person or Video: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
OSQ - Fourth Tuesday and Wednesday of the month; In-person or Video: 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
All in-person requests shall be made via email to KSP.Visits@ky.gov and shall be made at least seven days in advance. All video visits are scheduled through Securus.
