Located at 3100 Railroad Ave PO Box 5521 in Bismarck, ND, NDSP carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. NDSP offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.
The NDSP is a maximum-security facility accommodating 1,550 inmates across seven specialized units: North, East, West, South, Segregation, Overflow, and Treatment. Each unit caters to distinct offender needs, with the North unit serving as the initial orientation and reception area. Here, inmates undergo mental, physical, and medical assessments, as well as evaluations for necessary treatment programs.
Inmates in the North and South units typically reside in double-bunked cells. NDSP offers alcohol and substance abuse treatment alongside group therapies, anger management courses, and behavioral change programs. Additionally, vocational training and educational opportunities are provided to support inmate rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.
NDSP maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.

All men sentenced to the NDDOCR are received at the North Dakota State Penitentiary (NDSP) in Bismarck. New arrivals will go through an orientation program for approximately four weeks. During orientation, the rules are explained, and various staff members provide information on the programs available. Upon completion of orientation, the Classification Committee meets with the residents and assigns them a custody level, and housing unit, and recommends programming (work, education, and therapy) that may be beneficial for the residents during their incarceration.
