Sullivan Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison for male inmates is overseen by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Situated on an 850-acre tract of land, it shares its location with Woodbourne Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison. Funding for Sullivan was allocated following the loss of Rikers Island as a state facility in 1980, with construction completed by 1985 on a sharp upslope overlooking the Neversink River valley.
Access roads to the prison were built after the NYSDOC purchased the Lebowitz Pine View Hotel property in 1983. Initially, the hotel buildings served as an annex for Woodbourne facility prisoners until the completion of Sullivan. This annex operated as a minimum-security extension of Sullivan until its closure in 2010.
Sullivan houses approximately 560 to 580 inmates in four pods arranged in a circular layout, with 86% of them incarcerated for violent felonies and 60% serving life sentences. Notable inmates who have been housed at Sullivan include David Berkowitz, known as the "Son of Sam" serial killer, Nicholas Brooks, Robert Chambers (the "Preppie Killer"), Ronald DeFeo, Jr. (whose crimes inspired The Amityville Horror), Abraham Hirschfeld, Larme Price, and Arthur Shawcross, also known as the Genesee River Killer.
Sullivan Correctional Facility maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
