While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
The Wallkill Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison is situated just north of the hamlet of Wallkill, in the Town of Shawangunk. Established in 1933 as a collegiate-style campus without surrounding walls or fences, it comprised interconnected three-story English Gothic stone buildings. Initially designated for "Good Behavior/White Collar" inmates, its inmate population has evolved, now accommodating first-time offenders from start to finish. While fencing was later added in the 21st century, the facility remains open and free-moving.
With a capacity for about 600 inmates, Wallkill CF stands out as one of the few without a Special Housing Unit. Participating in the Correctional Industries program, select inmates can work in an optical shop, manufacturing and inspecting eyeglass lenses, provided they hold a diploma or GED and commit to a ten-month program duration.
The facility also offers vocational training in Horse Handling/Care, building maintenance, and Horticulture, providing inmates with valuable skills for potential employment. Additionally, alcohol and substance abuse treatment services are available to inmates during their incarceration, supporting their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
