Garza West Unit, a male correctional facility, has a capacity of 2,278 inmates and houses individuals classified under custody levels G1 to G3, including transient inmates. Situated on approximately 304 acres, the facility does not engage in agricultural or manufacturing operations but focuses on regional pest control, maintaining a unit garden, and utilizing security pack canines.

In terms of facility operations, Garza West Unit prioritizes unit maintenance to ensure smooth functioning. Additionally, it facilitates offender intake and receiving processes, along with substance abuse screening and assessment.

Medical services at Garza West encompass ambulatory medical, dental, and mental health care, managed by UTMB. These services are enhanced by telemedicine capabilities, digital medical services, and CPAP accommodating housing, all conveniently available on a single level.

Educationally, inmates have access to literacy programs such as Adult Basic Education/GED, as well as CHANGES/Pre-Release and Cognitive Intervention courses to support their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

Further programs and services include adult education (subject to availability), chaplaincy services, a faith-based dormitory, the GO KIDS Initiative, peer education, and reentry planning, all aimed at fostering personal growth and successful reintegration.

Garza West Unit does not currently participate in community work projects; however, it actively promotes volunteer initiatives within the facility. These initiatives encompass a wide range of activities, including literacy and education programs, employment and job skills training, substance abuse education, life skills development, parent training, support groups, victim awareness programs, and religious or faith-based studies and activities. Additionally, the facility houses a family visitation center, facilitating connections between inmates and their loved ones to support their rehabilitation journey.

Inmate Visitation

Visitation plays an important role in maintaining the association between inmates and their friends and family as well as strengthening family ties. Visitation Procedure Update (effective December 28, 2023)

Preparing for your visit:

Before you travel to a unit:

  • Confirm the inmate is assigned to the unit you are planning to visit and has visitation privileges.

  • Confirm the unit visitation schedule and verify that visitation has not been canceled. An eligible inmate cannot receive visitors if visitation has been canceled.

  • Do not bring cash (except coins, not more than $35).

  • No cell phones inside the secure perimeter.

  • Spiritual visits must be coordinated through the warden’s office.

Each inmate is only allowed one visit per weekend. To the extent possible, individuals on an inmate’s Visitors List should coordinate with one another and with the inmate to prevent subsequent visitors from being declined when they arrive at the unit.
