The inmates housed at Mountain View Unit located at 2305 Ransom Rd in Gatesville, TX are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.

Mountain View Unit is a Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) state prison housing up to 645 female inmates in Gatesville, TX. The unit is on 97 acres 45-minute from Waco TX with bunker-like buildings are punctuated with slit windows and wreathed in wire, with guard towers on every corner. In addition to its other functions, Mountain View Unit houses the state's female death row inmates.

Death row offenders are housed separately from the rest of the prisoners in single-person cells measuring 60/sq ft, with each cell having a tiny window. Their recreation is done individually. Some are allowed to watch television, though this is dependent upon agreeing to work for free, and all have a radio.

Karla Faye Tucker, executed February 3, 1998, was the first woman to be executed in Texas since 1863. The most recent female to be executed was Lisa Coleman, executed on September 17, 2014.

Among the better-known death row, offenders at Mountain View are Linda Carty, Brittany Holberg, and Darlie Routier.

A notable woman in the prison is Yolanda Saldívar, the murderer of Tejano superstar Selena. Saldívar shot and killed her on March 31, 1995, in Selena's hometown of Corpus Christi, TX. Inmate Locator

TDCJ - Mountain View Unit (MV) is a facility in the Texas Department of Corrections. The DOC publishes the names of their current inmates and identifies which of their locations the inmate is being held. Your search should start with the first DOC locator to see if your loved one is there. Begin with the first three letters of the offender's first and last name, it does not have to be spelled exactly.

The second box is the InmateAid Inmate Search. This database of inmates is user-generated content for the purpose of accessing and utilizing any or all of the InmateAid services. If you need our assistance creating your own inmate profile to keep in touch, email us at aid@inmateaid.com and we will assist you in locating your inmate.

As a last resort, you might have to pay for that information if we do not have it. The Arrest Record Search will cost you a small amount, but their data is the freshest available and for that reason, they charge to access it.

Covid Visitation Information

The impacts of COVID-19 are everywhere. No question one of the biggest is the long-term suspension of visitation. Phones are one thing, but there is nothing like seeing your loved one's face.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) knows the impact that the family unit has on successful reentry. TDCJ’s goal is offender rehabilitation and maintaining close contact with supportive family and friends is a critical part of that.

To help alleviate that, TDCJ is introducing a new “Remote Video Visitation” system, which allows family members at home to visit, via live video, with offenders on select units. Friends and family registration will begin on Thursday, August 13th. Remote visitations will begin on Monday August 17th.

Remote Video Visitation will be available to offenders at the following locations:

This project is a re-working of the video visitation system that was slated to debut in early March with connections from long-distance unit to unit. Now those systems have been reconfigured to accept registered off-site visitors.

Remote video visitations are 60 minutes long and will cost $10.00. At this time, offenders will be limited to one remote video visitation per month. Due to COVID-19, the visitation fee is being waived for the first 90 days.

Projects are in development to provide potential remote visitation solutions for other units. Please watch the TDCJ website for additional announcements.

In order to participate in the new remote video visitations, follow these registration steps:

  1. Go to https://securustech.net/tdcj/index.html#tdcj-video-visitation
  2. Click on the Sign-Up link under Video Communication
  3. Enter email address and create password
  4. Select three security questions to help verify your identity should you forget your password
  5. Fill out contact info as it appears on your ID

Remote video visits are on a set schedule that will begin and end at the scheduled times. Visitors may log into the remote video visitation 1 minute prior to the scheduled start. Sessions will not be extended due to delayed start times. Any session not started within 15 minutes of the scheduled start time, will require rescheduling. In the event of issues or technical difficulties, visitors may log out and log back in during the visit.

If you experience any problems, please contact the Securus Customer Service Center at 1-877-578-3658.
