The McConnell Unit, exclusively for male inmates, boasts a capacity of 2,956 and spans approximately 299 acres. While there are no agricultural operations, the facility employs Security Horses and Security Pack Canines, alongside a Unit Garden, to enhance security measures.

A notable aspect of McConnell is its Garment Factory, which contributes to manufacturing and logistics operations within the facility. Unit Maintenance ensures the upkeep and functionality of the premises, while Scent-Specific Canines and a Regional Release Site supplement operational efforts.

Medical care at McConnell is comprehensive, providing ambulatory medical, dental, and mental health services round-the-clock. The facility houses a specialty clinic for optometry and offers advanced services like Digital Medical Services (DMS), chronic care clinics, and Telemedicine and Telepsychiatry. A seventeen-bed assisted living infirmary, including specialized rooms for respiratory isolation and mental health observation, ensures comprehensive care for residents. Additionally, all medical services are conveniently located on a single level, including housing accommodations for CPAP users. UTMB oversees and manages medical operations within the facility.

Educational opportunities abound at McConnell, with programs covering literacy, pre-release preparation, and cognitive intervention. Career and technology programs, such as Bricklaying/Stone Masonry and Construction Carpentry, equip inmates with valuable skills for future employment.

Supplementary programs and services include a Faith-Based Dormitory, Adult Education Program, Peer Education, Reentry Planning, Chaplaincy Services, and the GO KIDS Initiative, promoting holistic rehabilitation and personal growth.

Although McConnell Unit does not currently engage in community work projects, it encourages volunteer involvement in various initiatives. These include literacy and education programs, substance abuse education, life skills training, parent education, support groups, and religious or faith-based studies and activities. Through these initiatives, the McConnell Unit aims to foster positive change and successful reintegration into society for its residents.

Inmate Visitation

Visitation plays an important role in maintaining the association between inmates and their friends and family as well as strengthening family ties. Visitation Procedure Update (effective December 28, 2023)

Preparing for your visit:

Before you travel to a unit:

  • Confirm the inmate is assigned to the unit you are planning to visit and has visitation privileges.

  • Confirm the unit visitation schedule and verify that visitation has not been canceled. An eligible inmate cannot receive visitors if visitation has been canceled.

  • Do not bring cash (except coins, not more than $35).

  • No cell phones inside the secure perimeter.

  • Spiritual visits must be coordinated through the warden’s office.

Each inmate is only allowed one visit per weekend. To the extent possible, individuals on an inmate’s Visitors List should coordinate with one another and with the inmate to prevent subsequent visitors from being declined when they arrive at the unit.
