Individuals under probation, parole, or community corrections supervision must obtain approval from both their supervising officer and the superintendent before visiting, although such visits are not typically approved.

All visitors must complete a visitation application, be pre-approved, and be placed on the resident’s visitation list before visiting.
All men sentenced to the NDDOCR are received at the North Dakota State Penitentiary (NDSP) in Bismarck. New arrivals will go through an orientation program for approximately four weeks. During orientation, the rules are explained, and various staff members provide information on the programs available. Upon completion of orientation, the Classification Committee meets with the residents and assigns them a custody level, and housing unit, and recommends programming (work, education, and therapy) that may be beneficial for the residents during their incarceration.
