Located at 4569 N State Rte in Ely, NV, ESP carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. ESP offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. ESP, operational since July 1989, serves as Nevada's maximum-security correctional facility, located about nine miles north of Ely in White Pine County. Constructed in two phases, the prison initially designed for 1,054 inmates, now accommodates up to 1,183 inmates following capacity adjustments.

With 406 employee positions, Ely State Prison is a significant employer in the region, and its staff actively engage in community initiatives. Emphasizing safety, security, and sanitation, the institution aligns with the Nevada Department of Corrections' mission to improve public safety and facilitate successful inmate reintegration.

The prison offers various programs aimed at vocational training, education, and treatment services to aid in inmate rehabilitation. ESP maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.

If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.

Visitation Information

All visits are by appointment only.

Phone (775) 977-5348 and select option 7 for Visiting.

Visitors are encouraged to call 24 hours in advance to make sure the inmate is still located at Ely State Prison and that their visiting days have not changed.

Visiting Hours - Processing begins at 7:30 A.M. and ends at 2:30 P.M.

  • There are two sessions, 8:00 am to 11:00 am and 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm
  • All visitors must sign in and be cleared through the metal detector.
  • All visitors and their vehicles are subject to search.
