Santiam Correctional Institution (SCI) offers a range of programs and services geared towards rehabilitation and reintegration. These include cognitive programs, substance abuse treatment, education, transition support, health services, work assignments under Measure 17, and religious services. Established in 1946, SCI initially served as an annex to the Oregon State Hospital for mental health patients. Over the years, it underwent several transformations, evolving into a minimum custody pre-release center in 1977 and ultimately becoming SCI in 1990. In 1992, SCI and Mill Creek Correctional Facility were administratively combined under one superintendent for operational efficiency.
The institution provides inmates with various job opportunities and programs, with many labor-type jobs arranged through contracts with state agencies, local organizations, and private industry within a 60-mile radius of Salem, Oregon. In addition to work assignments, SCI offers cognitive, substance abuse, transition, and education programs. Situated on a 12-acre parcel, with nine acres enclosed by the perimeter fence, SCI remains committed to facilitating the rehabilitation and preparation for reintegration of its residents.
