Have a question?

Incarceration affects every member of a family not just the person behind bars. Children, spouses, parents, and siblings all navigate their own version of the experience often without support or guidance. This section covers the full range of challenges families face including maintaining relationships through letters and calls, explaining incarceration to children, managing finances on a reduced income, navigating the visitation process, supporting a loved one through the emotional difficulty of incarceration, and preparing for reentry together. The questions answered here come from real families in real situations, parents who have not heard from their son in weeks, spouses managing alone, children trying to understand where their parent went. InmateAid was built by someone who experienced both sides of this equation and the guidance here reflects that understanding. Families are not bystanders in this process. They are essential to their loved one's success both inside and after release. See also our sections on Visitation, Relationship Issues, and Send Inmate Mail.

We have no control if the mail is slower than normal, that is clearly out of our control. What you are asking for is not within the abilities of the business. We mail thousands of letters and postcards per day. Sending someone to the post office to get tracking on your letters would require too much time - for what we'd have to charge, not sure it's going to be worth it.

To submit a complaint about a prison, you must file through the US Department of Justice. Explain your example of mistreatment of an inmate. This may fall under violations of the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution. The Special Litigation Section enforces the constitutional rights of people held in state or local government institutions, such as prisons, jails, juvenile correctional facilities, mental health facilities, developmental disability or mental retardation facilities, and nursing homes. Contact the Special Litigation Section at...

Selling a house before a prison surrender date is entirely doable as long as you start the process early enough, and the real estate process works the same way it would under any other circumstances. Contact a local real estate agent who works in your neighborhood. An agent familiar with your specific market will know what comparable homes are selling for, how to price yours competitively, and how to move the sale as efficiently as possible given your timeline. Be upfront...

Recovery academies and therapeutic programs within correctional settings often have their own rules about personal property that differ from standard incarceration guidelines. What is allowed at a general population facility may not be permitted in a structured recovery program, and the reverse can also be true in some cases. The only reliable way to get an accurate answer for NM Women's Recovery Academy specifically is to call the facility directly and ask. Ask to speak with a counselor, case manager, or...

The process isn't any different for folks not incarcerated. It's just that being locked up makes the simple process harder.  He will need to file a petition with the court, but most likely will have to pay an attorney to make sure it's done properly. The person he is divorcing will have to be served papers and then the fun begins.

b Custody relates to the arrangements of a child custody determination. Depending on the state, there are varying parameters that are followed. This might be a visitation restriction or something related to the way joint custody will be handled between the two parents.

In a situation like this, the fastest and most effective way is to contact the facility directly and ask to speak with the chaplain or a counselor. Most jails and prisons have a process for urgent or sensitive messages like a death in the family. The chaplain or designated staff member can: Verify the information if needed Deliver the message to your husband in person Offer him support at the same time If you call the main number, explain clearly that it is a family emergency and...

Inmates do not have access to the Internet and without it they cannot access InmateAid to know there is an Inmate Profile Page. Unfortunately there are no "free programs" for communication. Your inmate can apply for indigent mail with his counselor and they do provide free stamps, envelopes and writing material.

Going to jail does not automatically change a child support order. Only a judge can change or modify a child support order. If a parent that is in jail has income or assets that can be used to pay for your child's support, he or she has to continue to pay child support. If there already is a child support order, and the parent who was ordered to pay child support goes to jail (is incarcerated), the child support order does...
