What to Do When an Inmate Goes Silent After a Health Scare?
Call the facility right now and do not wait.…

Call the facility right now and do not wait. Someone passing out repeatedly and then going silent for two days is a situation that warrants an immediate welfare check, and you have every right to ask for one. When you call, ask to speak with the unit team secretary first. Explain clearly and calmly that your girlfriend has been calling you daily, that she had been reporting episodes of passing out, and that you have not heard from her in two...

How long can they keep an inmate in the SHU prior to transfer?
Do you know why he is in the SHU?…

Do you know why he is in the SHU? The reason behind being in solitary would probably answer why it's taking so long. When I was in the SHU, there was a guy there for 11 months awaiting a transfer. He was caught with a cellphone and had to do 18 months in the SHU before they would transfer him to a higher custody prison. Administrative makes me think that he might have asked to be taken out of the...

Can a Felon Take Their Child to Visit Their Father in Prison
Possibly, and the fact that you are the child's parent rather than a random person with a felony record is your strongest argument for getting approved.…

Possibly, and the fact that you are the child's parent rather than a random person with a felony record is your strongest argument for getting approved. Most correctional facilities have an automatic restriction on visitors with felony convictions, and Potomac Correctional Center in West Virginia follows standard West Virginia DOC visitation policy which includes that restriction. The standard process does not approve felons for visitation without additional review. That is the baseline you are working against. However, the parent of an inmate's...

what privileges do inmate have while in the SHU?
The SHU restrictions are very rigid.…

The SHU restrictions are very rigid. Inmates are permitted ONE 15-minute phone call per week. Their commissary list is reduced to a couple dozen items, only... more necessity items than and not a wide list of choices compared to the norm. The visits are limited depending on the reason for being sent there. Sometimes there are no visits, other times it'd be reduced to once a month.

Sentencing Questions
Why Is the Release Date Earlier Than a 3 Year Sentence in CA?
The shorter release date is exactly what is supposed to happen, and it is good news rather than a mistake.…

The shorter release date is exactly what is supposed to happen, and it is good news rather than a mistake. When a sentence is imposed and the inmate enters the system, good time credits are applied at the start of the sentence rather than earned gradually over time. In California, most inmates receive a standard credit of half time, meaning they serve approximately 50 percent of the imposed sentence for most offenses, though some charges carry different percentages. On a three...
