Every new or incoming inmate goes through an orientation period before phone and visitation privileges are activated. This process typically takes about a week, though it can run a little shorter or longer depending on the facility's intake workload and scheduling. During that window, the inmate is getting classified, processed, and briefed on the facility's rules and programs. Phone access, visiting lists, and commissary access all get set up as part of that orientation, not before it. If you have not heard...

Inmates may not receive anything like protein shakes or protein powder from the outside. They are only allowed to buy items off of the commissary list. If protein powder is found in the possession of an inmate, it will be an immediate trip to the SHU and possible loss of good time, loss of commissary, phone and visitation privileges and likely a transfer to a one-level higher facility.

How to Calculate Sentence Time and Find an Inmate's Location
There are several solid questions here so let's take them one at a time.…

There are several solid questions here so let's take them one at a time. On the sentence calculation, one third of a 15 month sentence works out to five months. After serving two months, roughly three months remain before hitting that one third mark. Whether one third is the relevant threshold depends on the specific system and the offense. Some state systems use one third as a parole eligibility benchmark while others use different fractions or percentage based calculations. The federal...

An inmate who is under investigation for conspiracy to smuggle contraband has basically no rights.…

An inmate who is under investigation for conspiracy to smuggle contraband has basically no rights. They are not entitled to a lawyer; they are not entitled to privileges afforded to other inmates. Privileges such as phone time, commissary and visitation may be taken away for months and months because they are not a basic inmate right; they are "an extra". Inmates lose sight of the fact that they are prisoners of the jurisdiction where they are sentenced. Some think that...

When someone gets transferred to a new facility the visitation rules, scheduling process, and any waiting periods before visits are allowed vary enough from jail to jail that the only reliable source is the facility itself. For DeKalb County Jail in Tennessee specifically, visitation schedules, days, and times are set by the facility and can change based on staffing, population, and facility operations. The best move is to call the jail directly and ask to speak with someone who can give...

Being in single man lockup, which is typically administrative segregation or protective custody rather than general population, does affect visitation but it does not necessarily eliminate it entirely. Visitation for inmates in segregated housing is more restricted than for general population inmates. Some facilities suspend visitation during the initial placement period while the situation is being assessed. Others allow non-contact visits through a partition on a limited schedule. The specific policy depends entirely on the facility and the reason for the...

Both phone access and visitation get significantly restricted when someone is placed in segregation, but the specifics depend on why they are there. On the phone side, inmates in seg are typically limited to one 15-minute call per week. That is the standard across most federal and state facilities and it applies whether the placement is administrative or disciplinary in nature. However, if the reason for the segregation placement is a disciplinary infraction and a phone restriction was issued as part...

When an inmate is released from a federal facility like SeaTac to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the deportation process typically moves faster than most people expect. Once ICE takes custody the clock starts and the process from transfer to actual deportation generally runs a few weeks, assuming the sentence has been fully served and there are no additional legal holds complicating the picture. The timeline depends on a few key factors. If the full sentence has been served and there are...

A Class 4 yard in the Arizona Department of Corrections system is not maximum security but it is a higher custody level. Arizona classifies inmates on a scale where higher numbers generally indicate more restrictive housing and more significant behavioral or security concerns. A Class 4 yard houses inmates who have either come in with serious offenses, accumulated disciplinary history inside, or both. It is not the highest possible classification but it is well above minimum or medium. Whether your friend...

Inmates go through an Admission and Orientation before they are allowed telephone calls and visitation. Once they are situated (a couple of days up to 2 weeks) they may submit lists for both that require some approval. Be patient, all of the facilities have their own rules and procedures. Inmates get mail Monday through Friday. The staff opens and inspects all mail for contraband - this sometimes delays the process too.
